Kempthorne, Dirk Arthur (1951- )

US Republican politician, interior secretary from 2006. A consensus-building politician and effective manager, he held a succession of elected positions in Idaho from 1985, before being chosen in March 2006 by President George W Bush to become interior secretary.

Raised in Spokane, Washington, Kempthorne studied political science at the University of Idaho. After graduation, he remained in Idaho, becoming a vice-president of the Home Builders Association, before being elected mayor of Boise, in 1985. He was re-elected in 1989 and was elected senator for Idaho in 1992 and governor of Idaho in 1998.
