Kendal, Ehrengard Melusina von der Schulenburg, Duchess of Kendal (1667–1743)

German mistress of King George I. She entered the service of the Electress Sophia of Hannover, George I's mother, in 1690 and soon became his mistress. She followed him to London when he ascended the English throne in 1714, and in 1716 was created duchess of Kendal and granted valuable pensions. She had great influence with the King, but was generally unpopular at court.
