Kennan, George

Kennan, George (1845–1924)

US explorer and journalist. He travelled extensively in Russia and wrote Tent Life in Siberia 1870 and Siberia and the Exile System 1891. His reputation for integrity made him the White House telegrapher during President Garfield's final weeks of life after being shot in 1881.

He was born in Norwalk, Ohio. Without a college education, he became an expert telegrapher and writer.
