Kennebunk

Town in southwestern Maine, on the Kennebunk and Mousam rivers, 6 km/4 mi north of the Atlantic coast, 14 km/9 mi southwest of Biddeford; population (1990) 8,000. An early shipbuilding, trade, and industrial centre, the town has many fine examples of period architecture, including the Wedding Cake House, a Gothic residential home with intricate carvings.

It is the birthplace of author Kenneth Roberts (1885–1957), and gained note in the 1980s as the headquarters of Tom's of Maine, producers of natural toiletries. Kennebunkport (population (1990) 3,400) is just below Kennebunk, at the mouth of the Kennebunk River; it was known as Arundel until 1821. The vacation home of President George Bush, at Walkers Point, attracted much attention during his time in office.
