Kenora

Town and administrative headquarters of Kenora District, western Ontario, Canada, at the northern end of the Lake of the Woods, 50 km/30 mi east of the Manitoba border; population (1991) 9,800. It has pulp, paper, and flour mills, fish-processing plants, and boatyards, but depends heavily on holidaymakers and tourists.

History

A fur trade point from the 18th century, it later developed as a lumbering centre, and had an 1890s gold mining boom. It was incorporated as Rat Portage, Manitoba, in 1882, when the Canadian Pacific Railway was building in the area, became an Ontario township in 1892, and was renamed Kenora in 1904.

One of the deepest and highest gold grades have been discovered 40 kilometres west-north west of Fort Frances and 80 kilometres south of Kenora, Ontario.
