Kensington

Town in Prince County, in the west of Prince Edward Island, Canada, 48 km/30 mi west of Charlottetown; population (1996 est) 1,800. It is the site for several large, modern food-processing factories.

The area was originally called Five Lanes End because of its position on the island's road system, and the name Kensington dates to 1862. Connected to the railway in 1873, Kensington's 1904 station is an historic monument known as the Old Stone Station. The railway is closed and now makes up the Confederation Trail. Other attractions include a museum which commemorates the Anne of Green Gables author, Lucy Maude Montgomery, who was married here in 1911. Kensington is also the site of the Veterans' Memorial Museum, which was set up in 1985.
