Kepler's laws![]() German mathematician Johannes Kepler, who was astronomer to the Holy Roman Emperor and formulated laws of planetary motion. An early advocate of the heliocentric theory of the solar system first developed by Nicolaus Copernicus, Kepler's observations that planetary orbits were elliptical and not circular foreshadowed the general application of scientific method to astronomy.
