Kermadec Islands

Volcanic island group in the Pacific Ocean, 800 km/497 mi northwest of North Island, New Zealand; area 30 sq km/12 sq mi. They are uninhabited except for meteorological and seismological stations on the largest island, Raoul (Sunday Island), which has an area of 28 sq km/11 sq mi and reaches a height of 525 m/1,723 ft at Mount Mumukai. The islands have been a dependency of New Zealand since 1887.
