Kerman

City in Kerman province, southeast Iran, over 1,500 m/4,920 ft above sea level; population (2006) 515,100. It is a centre of the Iranian carpet industry and for the mining of copper, precious metals, iron ore, and coal. The city was almost totally devastated in 1794 by an earthquake. It has a small Zoroastrian community.

The town acts as the regional capital for southeast Iran and is linked by road and railway with Yezd and Tehran and with the border town of Zahedan. Most of the province is barren desert, very hot in summer and mild in winter.
