Kern County

County in south-central California; area 21,057 sq km/8,130 sq mi; population (1990) 543,500. Its capital is Bakersfield. A rich agricultural and oil-producing area, it is bordered to the south by the Tehachapi Mountains, at the southern end of the San Joaquin Valley; to the east by the Sierra Nevada; and to the west by the Coast Ranges. It also includes part of the Mojave Desert.
