Kerr, Deborah

Kerr, Deborah (1921- )

Scottish actor. She often played genteel, ladylike roles. She is best known to international audiences for her starring roles opposite Yul Brynner in The King and I (1956) and Cary Grant in An Affair to Remember (1957). Her performance in such British films as Major Barbara (1940), The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943), and Black Narcissus (1946) led to starring parts in Hollywood, such as Quo Vadis (1951) and From Here to Eternity (1953).

She retired from feature films in 1969, but made a comeback with The Assam Garden (1985). She was presented with an Academy Award for lifetime achievement in 1993.
