Kerwin, Joseph Peter

Kerwin, Joseph Peter (1932– )

US astronaut and physician. He was the first US physician in space, when he flew on Skylab 2 (see Skylab) in May 1973 as the science-pilot of the first crewed mission to the Skylab space station. He studied the crew's reaction to microgravity and carried out an extravehicular activity. Kerwin was selected as an astronuat in 1965 and resigned from NASA in 1987.
