Keshan disease

Inflammation of the heart muscle caused a Coxsackie virus. It can be fatal and is endemic in parts of rural China. US researchers 1995 found evidence that the disease was triggered by selenium deficiency; when selenium supplements were given in the affected areas incidence was reduced.
