kestrel

Either of two small species of falcon (genus Falco): the Eurasian kestrel F. tinnunculus, about 13.5 in/35 cm long, which occasionally visits eastern North America and the Aleutians; and the American kestrel or sparrowhawk F. sparverius, somewhat smaller, found throughout most of North America. Both species are russet, gray, and tan in color, with the male American kestrel having more gray on its wings. They hunt mainly by hovering in mid-air while watching for grasshoppers and small mammals.
