The Newland Valley, near Keswick in Cumbria. Situated at the heart of the Lake District, at the northern end of Derwentwater, Keswick has attracted increasing numbers of visitors since the 18th century, when the town was associated with the ‘Lake poets’ such as Robert Southey. It is now the major tourist centre in the region.

Market town and tourist centre in Cumbria, England, 35 km/22 mi southwest of Carlisle; population (2001) 5,400. The town is in the centre of the Lake District and offers accommodation for walkers and holidaymakers. Another industry is the manufacture of pencils.

Derwentwater is adjacent to the town and a number of high hills are within easy reach. Skiddaw (930 m/3,052 ft), immediately north of Keswick, gives fine views.
