Ketchikan

City on Revillagigedo Island, southeastern Alaska, in the Alexander Archipelago, 370 km/230 mi southeast of Juneau; population (2000) 7,900. It is a port on the Inside Passage and a major salmon-fishing centre. Lumbering, pulp milling, and mining are also important.

The city developed as a supply stop for prospectors heading north during the 1890s gold rush, and now serves as a trade centre for the region. The area is known for its Tlingit and Haida totems and other carvings.
