Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.09 sec.

Kett, Robert (c.1500–1549)

English revolutionary, leader of Kett's Rebellion against land enclosures.

Kett was a tanner and landowner from Wymondham, Norfolk. In July 1549, he and his brother William, incensed by the enclosure of common lands, led a popular uprising that succeeded in capturing Norwich. However, the rebels were disorganized and were swiftly destroyed by troops under the Earl of Warwick. The Kett brothers were captured and hanged; Robert was put to death in Norwich on 7 December, after a trial in London.
