Key Largo

Island in southeastern Florida, the longest and closest to the mainland of the Florida Keys, 48 km/30 mi south of Miami; length 48 km/30 mi; width less than 3 km/2 mi; population (2000) 11,900. It is linked by bridge to the mainland by the Overseas Highway to Key West. It is a centre for water recreation, with many marinas and fishing and diving facilities.

The island is low-lying, composed mainly of coral and mangroves. The John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park is here.
