Key, Francis Scott

Key, Francis Scott (1779–1843)

US lawyer and poet. He wrote the song ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ while Fort McHenry, Baltimore, was besieged by British troops in 1814; since 1931 it has been the national anthem of the USA.

Key was born in Maryland. He served as US attorney for the District of Columbia 1833–41.
