Khambhat

Town in Gujarat state, western India, situated at the mouth of the Mahi River, some 420 km/260 mi north of Mumbai (formerly Bombay); population (1991) 99,800. Cambay was the seaport for the former state capital Ahmadabad, although now it has silted up and declined in importance. Exploitation of oil deposits in the Gulf of Khambhat may regenerate the harbour.

An early centre for Arab traders, Khambhat was a flourishing city at the beginning of the 17th century, with English, Dutch and Portuguese factories.
