Khan, Vilayat

Khan, Vilayat (1928–2004)

Indian sitar player. He was one of the leading proponents of Indian classical music of his time and one of the first sitar players to perform internationally. He is especially known for developing a vocal sound.

He toured, recorded, and taught music especially in India and the USA. He also composed scores for the Satyajit Ray film Jalsaghar/The Music Room (1958) and the MerchantIvory film The Guru (1969).

He was born in East Bengal (now Bangladesh). His father was the famous sitar player Inayat Khan (1894–1938). A child prodigy, Vilayat Khan gave his first performance at the age of six and made his first recording at the age of eight.
