Khanty

People of northwestern Siberia, numbering about 20,000 (1993). Their language is part of the Finno-Ugric family. Many are reindeer herders on the tundra as well as fishers, hunters, and trappers. Their traditional way of life has been disrupted by the Russian oil industry.

The Khants were conquered by the Siberian Tatars and resisted Russian conquest and rule between the 16th and 18th centuries. Their religious practices combine shamanism and ancestor worship .
