Khasi Hills

Khasi Hills

An extensive upland region of Meghalaya state, northeast India, together with the Jaintia Hills and Garo Hills. Extending east–west for over 300 km/185 mi and reaching an altitude of 1,961 m/6,434 ft, the Khasi Hills are a barrier between the great valleys of the Brahmaputra and the Surma rivers. The Khasi people occupy the valleys growing rice, and practise shifting cultivation on the forested hillsides.

Meghalaya's capital of Shillong is situated to the north of the Khasi hills, at almost 1,500 m/5,000 ft and has been subject to earthquakes which affect the surrounding district.
