khyal

Vocal genre of north Indian (Hindustani) music. It is characterized by a text setting (usually in two sections, sthayi and antara) and a wide variety of improvisation techniques, most distinctively ‘tan’, melismatic flourishes which can be highly elaborate. Khyal is the most commonly heard vocal genre in the tradition.
