Title granted by the Turkish sultan to his Egyptian viceroy in 1867, retained by succeeding rulers until 1914.

As for the Khedive of Egypt selling shares to Britain in 1875, John Bull was adept at propping up sybaritic satraps for its own purposes, i.
Ismail Pasha, Khedive of Egypt, commissioned Verdi to write it for performance in January 1871, paying him 150,000 francs, but the premiere was delayed because of the Franco-Prussian War.
In 1875 Disraeli purchased 176,000 shares in it from the Khedive of Egypt, but in 1956 President Nasser nationalised the canal, thus abrogating the related treaty existing between the two countries.
