April 17, 2005 marked the thirtieth anniversary of the fall of Phnom Penh to the forces of Democratic Kampuchea--the egregious "Khmer Rouge"--over the Khmer Republic of General Lon Nol, who in turn had overthrown Prince Norodom Sihanouk in 1970. With the collapse of the Khmer Republic in April 1975, a small cadre of French-educated communist intellectuals presided for three years and eight months over one of the most brutally repressive regimes in modern times.
