Khon Kaen

Regional capital of northeast Thailand, 160 km/99 mi north of Nakhon Ratchasima; population (2000 est) 141,000. Khon Kaen is an expanding service and commercial centre, trading mainly in rice and freshwater fish. The main industry is the processing of agricultural produce.

Khon Kaen is supplied with hydroelectric power from a dam on the nearby Phong River. It is home to Khon Kaen University (1965) and a campus of the Rajamangala Institute of Technology (1975).
