Khorsabad

Village in Iraq, 21 km/13 mi northeast of Mosul, site of the Assyrian capital Dur Sharrukin, built by Sargon II.

The acropolis, containing the palace and many temples, was excavated by Place (1852–55), and the Oriental Institute, Chicago (1930–35).

From Nineveh, Nimrud and nearby Khorsabad, the British and French acquired (thanks to the Ottoman authorities) vast libraries of clay tablets -- including parts of the 4500 year old Epic of Gilgamesh, and the gigantic winged-bulls and finely sculpted panels of Assyrian kings, courtiers, gods and warriors that now grace galleries in the British Museum and the Louvre.
but rediscovered in the Mesopotamian archeological sites of Khorsabad in 1845, an area in Northern Iraq.
