kibbutzIsraeli communal collective settlement with collective ownership of all property and earnings, collective organization of work and decision-making, and communal housing for children. A modified version, the Moshav Shitufi, is similar to the collective farms that were typical of the USSR. Other Israeli cooperative rural settlements include the Moshav Ovdim, which has equal opportunity, and the similar but less strict Moshav settlement. |

We go to kibbutzes and schools and speak as one Palestinian and one Jew telling our personal stories. The dusty, rather dowdy country of cacti and kibbutzes presented to visitors through the official publications of the tourism ministry leaves no clue as to the vibrancy, the oddness, the intensity of the place. As quickly as leagues make like kibbutzes, owners find holes in the fence. |
