Kidd, Benjamin

Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.12 sec.

Kidd, Benjamin (1858–1916)

English sociologist and popular philosopher. His first work Social Evolution, 1894, was an instant success. In it, he proposed that all human history was shaped by religion, and that humanity only advanced morally by subordinating individual, selfish interests to the common good.

Kidd was a clerk in the Inland Revenue, but the popularity of his first book persuaded him to devote all his time to writing and travel. His other works include Principles of Western Civilisation, 1902, and The Science of Power, 1918.
