Kienzl, Wilhelm (1857–1941)

Austrian composer. His father, a lawyer, became mayor of Graz in 1861, and the family settled there. He studied there under W Mayer, who also taught Weingartner and Busoni, and later went to Prague and Vienna for further study. Jensen and Liszt encouraged him to compose and he was in close contact with Wagner at Bayreuth for a time. He composed orchestral, vocal, and chamber music. He was an opera conductor at Amsterdam, Krefeld, Hamburg, and Munich (until 1893).

Operas

Urvasi (1886), Heilmar der Narr (1892), Der Evangelimann (1895), Don Quixote and In Knecht Rupprechts Werkstatt (1907), Der Kuhreigen (1911), Das Testament (1916), Hassan der Schwärmer (1925), Sanctissimum. He adapted Jensen's opera Die Erbin von Montfort to a new libretto based on Gozzi's Turandot.
