Kigoma

Kigoma

Town and port on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika, north of Ujiji, Tanzania, at the western terminal of the railway from Dar es Salaam; population (2002) 131,800. It trades in timber, cotton, palm oil, and tobacco.

The town received influxes of refugees in the mid- and late 1990s during civil unrest in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, and Burundi.
