Killala

Town in County Mayo, Republic of Ireland, 13 km/8 mi northwest of Ballina; population (2002) 650. It is the site of a complex manufacturing and spinning acrylic fibre. Killala dates from the 5th century. The French landed there in 1798 to support the rebellion against the British by the United Irishmen.

The bishopric of Killala was reputedly founded by St Patrick. The cathedral was rebuilt in 1670 but incorporates an older Gothic doorway. In the cathedral grounds are a round tower and a souterrain (prehistoric underground dwelling).
