Kilgore

City in eastern Texas, 180 km/112 mi southeast of Dallas; population (1990) 11,100. In the middle of the East Texas Oilfield, it is a refining and distribution centre. Cotton and lumber are also important, and the city manufactures ceramics and oilfield and plumbing supplies.

Settled in 1872 as a railway stop in what had been plantation country, it boomed after the 1930 discovery of the oilfield. At one time there were over 1,200 derricks within the city limits. It is home to Kilgore College (1935) and a large rehabilitation hospital.
