Kilgore, Harley M(artin) (1893–1956)

US senator. He served in the US Senate (Democrat, West Virginia) 1941–56. He chaired the so-called ‘Kilgore committee’ that oversaw US mobilization efforts for World War II and helped to set up the War Mobilization Board in 1943. On the influential Appropriations Committee, he helped to establish the National Science Foundation in 1950.

He was born in Brown, West Virginia, and became a judge.
