Killaloe

Town in County Clare, Republic of Ireland, on the River Shannon at the edge of Lough Derg, 27 km/17 mi from Limerick; population (2002) 1,200. Killaloe was the former seat of Brian Bóruma, High King of Ireland, and is now the cathedral town of a Protestant diocese.

A ring fort dating from the 11th century, 2 km/1 mi to the west, was reputedly a stronghold of the O'Brien family, the descendants of Brian Bóruma.

One of them is that taken by Bishop Willie Walsh of Killaloe, a small country diocese in County Clare on Ireland's western seaboard.
Celebrations start today and raffle and contest prizes include a round trip to Southern Ireland and the opportunity to actually own an Irish pub in Killaloe, County Clare.
The arrival had special significance for three dioceses in a companion relationship: the diocese of Limerick and Killaloe in the (Anglican) Church of Ireland, the Canadian diocese of Quebec, and the Episcopal church diocese of New Hampshire.
