Killeen

City in Bell County, central Texas, 115 mi/185 km south of Fort Worth and 61 mi/98 km north of Austin; population (1992) 66,600. Although some concrete is produced here, the economy relies heavily on the nearby army base, Fort Hood (established in 1942). The city is home to the University of Central Texas (1967) and Central Texas College (1965).

Killeen was laid out in 1882 by the Santa Fe Railroad, and incorporated in 1908.
