Killyleagh

Killyleagh

Town in County Down, Northern Ireland, 10 km/6 mi from Downpatrick; population (2001) 2,500. It manufactures linen yarns, and its small port is frequented by yachts on Strangford Lough. Killyleagh has a castle, heavily restored in the 19th century.

The original castle dated from the 14th century, and the southwest tower remains from this period; it also has one 17th-century tower.

Killyleagh was the birthplace of Hans Sloane, one of the founders of the British Museum.
