Kilrush

Market town and port in County Clare, Republic of Ireland; population (2002) 2,700. Kilrush harbour on the north bank of the Shannon estuary has been developed into a tourist marina. It is the access point for nearby Scattery Island, a former monastic settlement dating from the 6th century. Traditional horse fairs are held in Kilrush every June, October, and November.

On Scattery Island are the ruins of the 6th-century monastery allegedly founded by St Senan. The remains of five churches, a round tower, and a standing stone can be seen here. There are also the ruins of an abandoned crofting settlement, which are of historical interest.
