Kilwinning

Town in North Ayrshire unitary authority, Scotland, situated on the right bank of the River Garnock, about 40 km/25 mi southwest of Glasgow; population (2001) 15,900. It is effectively joined to Irvine, forming part of the New Town area, and has diverse industries, including those related to iron production.

The town derives its name from St Winnin, an inhabitant in the 8th century; an abbey dedicated to the saint was built by Hugh de Morville in 1140.

Freemasonry in Scotland is said to have originated in Kilwinning.
