Kim, Earl (1920– )

US composer. In its precision and rhythmic subtlety, his music reflects his Korean origins. He was professor of music at Harvard 1967–90.

He studied at University College of Los Angeles with Arnold Schoenberg in 1939, and with Ernest Bloch and Roger Sessions at Berkeley.

Now and Then for soprano, flute, viola, and harp (1981), Where Grief Slumbers for soprano, harp, and strings (1982), The 11th Dream for soprano, baritone, piano, violin, and cello (1989), Three Poems in French for soprano and string quartet (1989), Some thoughts on Keats and Coleridge for chorus (1990).
