Kim Il Sung (1912–1994)

North Korean communist politician and marshal. He became prime minister in 1948 and led North Korea in the Korean War 1950–53. He became president in 1972, retaining the presidency of the Communist Workers' party. He liked to be known as the ‘Great Leader’ and campaigned constantly for the reunification of Korea. His son Kim Jong Il, known as the ‘Dear Leader’, succeeded him.

This year's event takes as its theme North Korea's goal of achieving prosperity by 2012, the 100th anniversary of the birth of its founder, the late Kim Il Sung, "eternal president" and father of current leader Kim Jong Il.
Jimmy Carter visited Pyongyang in 1994, when Mr Clinton was in office, and met then-North Korean leader Kim Il Sung, the late father of current leader.
Kim said cultural exchange plays an important role in boosting the precious DPRK-China friendship established by late President Kim Il Sung and leaders of the elder generation of China for a long period.
