King, James

King, James (1925–2005)

US tenor, formerly baritone. He was engaged in Berlin from 1962 and in that year appeared at the Salzburg Festival in Gluck's Iphigénie en Aulide. He appeared at the Bayreuth Festival from 1965 and at the Metropolitan Opera House, New York from 1966 (where his debut was as Florestan), specializing in Strauss and Wagner roles, for example the Emperor and Siegmund. At the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London he sang Bacchus in 1985 and Florestan 1986; at Nice Lohengrin in 1990; and at the Metropolitan Opera House, New York Aegisthus in Elektra in 1992.
