King Island

Island in the Bass Strait, between Australia and Tasmania; length 64 km/40 mi; width 27 km/17 mi. It is one of the islands that constitute the state of Tasmania. Its main administrative, commercial, and retail centre is Currid; population (2001) 1,700. Its other principal towns are Grassy Harbour, Cape Wickham, Yarra Creek, Naracoopa, and Pegarah. Products include processed bull kelp and dairy products (especially cheese and cream). The island is a popular tourist destination, with beaches, shipwrecks off the coast, and a lighthouse.
