King County

King County

County in west-central Washington, bordered to the west by Puget Sound; area 5,512 sq km/2,128 sq mi; population (1990) 1,507,300. Its capital is Seattle. There are many industries in the capital; other economic activities include lumbering, coalmining, market gardening, and livestock and dairy ranching.

It is Washington's most populous county and is dominated by Seattle, its suburbs, and satellite cities such as Bellevue, Renton, and Auburn in the west. Also in the west are Vashon and Maury islands, in Puget Sound. The county includes part of Snoqualmie National Forest and the Snoqualmie River.
