King Kong

Fantasy creature movie (1933), made in Hollywood in black and white. A film-maker and his star (played by Fay Wray) arrive at Skull Island in Southeast Asia in pursuit of a legendary giant gorilla. They capture and transport King Kong to New York, where the ape eventually meets his doom astride the Empire State Building. The film had several sequels and was remade in 1976 and 2005.

The story is a reworking of the ‘Beauty and the Beast’ fable. The film's enduring appeal lies in the pathos created by Willis O'Brien's (1886–1962) special effects and model work. The original version was directed by Merian C Cooper (1893–1973) and Ernest B Schoedsack (1893–1979), and written by Cooper and James Ashmore Creelman (1901–1941).

The 1976 remake, directed by John Guillermin (1925– ) and starring Jessica Lange and Jeff Bridges, won an Academy Award for visual effects. The 2005 remake, directed by Peter Jackson and starring Naomi Watts (1968– ) and Jack Black (1969– ), won Academy Awards for visual effects, sound mixing, and sound editing.

Noting that the average American consumes as much energy as a 30,000 kg primate, Cox summons up the image--which--many people will sympathize with worldwide--of a nation of King Kongs, clinging to their Empire State Building and hopelessly swatting the specters of imperial collapse and ecological crisis.
But war is inevitable; we get two King Kongs in battle instead of one; and the big finale by hack director Louis Leterrier is like Godzilla Meets Reptilicus, all staged in front of the Apollo Theatre in Harlem.
A FIRM which has created spaceships and zombies for the big screen is hoping a major investment will help bring dinosaurs and King Kongs flocking to the North East.
