Pentheus

In Greek mythology, a king of Thebes, son of Agave, and grandson of the founder of the city, Cadmus. Opposed to the worship of Dionysus, god of wine and excess, he was torn to pieces on Mount Cithaeron by the maenads, followers of the god who included Agave and two of her sisters. His story is the subject of Euripides' tragedy The Bacchae.

The myth may represent historical opposition to the spread of the orgiastic rites of Dionysus.
