| Increasingly in the course of the eighteenth century, Oyo had to deploy its army to contain the rising power of the kingdom of Dahomey and its capital at Abomey, which had its own ambitions to seize the seaports and control the trade. Lyons draws insightful comparisons between the religious references in Powers's quilts and African-American spirituals, and between Powers's style of applique and that produced in the West African kingdom of Dahomey (now Benin). Kerekou's government was clearly aware of the ethnic sensibilities and the mixed history of the kingdom of Dahomey among the people of Benin. |
