Kipketer, Wilson (1970- )

Kenyan-born Danish 800-metre runner who in 1997 enjoyed one of the most remarkable seasons in athletics history. In January at the World Indoor Championships in Paris he twice smashed the indoor world record, winning the final in a time of 1:42.67. On 7 July in Stockholm he equalled Sebastian Coe's 16-year-old 800-metre world record of 1:41.73. On 13 August in Zürich, just four days after retaining his outdoor world title, he broke the record with a run of 1:41.24. Finally on 24 August in Cologne, he reduced the record by a further 0.13 seconds with a run of 1:41.11.

At the World Championships in Seville, Spain, in August 1999, he won his third consecutive 800-metre gold medal. At the 2000 Olympics in Sydney he was surprisingly beaten into second place by the German athlete Nils Schumann.
