Kirk, Norman Eric (1923–1974)

New Zealand Labour centre-left politician, prime minister 1972–74. He withdrew New Zealand troops from the Vietnam War, attempted to block French nuclear tests in the Pacific, and developed closer ties with Australia, as a counterbalance to UK's entry to the European Economic Community (EEC; now the European Union). He died in office and was succeeded as prime minister by his finance minister, Wallace Rowling.

After working as an engine driver, he entered parliament in 1957, representing the Labour Party. He became party president in 1964 and was leader of the opposition in the House of Representatives until victory in the 1972 general election ended 12 years of National Party government.
